GRTC Coach #309

1990 Flxible 35096-6T

The original paint scheme for #309, Repainted July 2009

Coach 309 is a Flxible Metro 35096-6T and is powered by a 6V92TA Detroit Diesel engine with Allison V731 ATEC transmission. It was part of an order of 27 built in August, 1990 for the Greater Richmond Transit Company (GRTC).

These were the last buses to be delivered in Richmond's orange and tan livery and were also Richmond's last order of buses from the now-defunct Flxible Corporation of Delaware, Ohio. The orange and tan paint scheme and the use of Flxible buses date back to the early 1970s.

Coach 309 saw a few changes throughout its service life. It was repainted white with purple and black stripes in the mid-1990s when GRTC updated their paint scheme.  This bus was also retrofitted with electronic dot matrix destination signs to replace its original curtain-type roll signs. Coach 309 was also one of Richmond's first buses to be equipped with a wheelchair lift to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed the same year it was built.  #309 as painted upon its arrival to CC & T. The light is much better.)GRTC's last Flxible buses continued to operate in regular service until December 2003, when they were replaced by Richmond's first low-floor transit buses.  Coach 309 was donated to the Commonwealth Coach & Trolley Museum the following February. It was immediately pressed into service in the Operational Fleet.  The bus was returned to its original colors in March of 2009.
